Therapy Approach
Incorporating three of today’s leading evidence-based therapies , Dr Hana Guo draws on these effective treatments, namely 1) ISTDP - main therapeutic framework, 2) EMDR, and 3) CBT.
Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) is an active and focused contemporary form of psychodynamic therapy designed to provide rapid access to the unconscious. ISTDP helps clients to explore and work through specific long-term intra-psychic and interpersonal conflicts, patterns of behaviours and gain insight into how our early life continues to influence the way we experience and interact with the world. It is a powerful therapy approach with research showing long-lasting benefits, with equal or sometimes better maintenance of gains at follow-up than the other evidence-based therapy (Leichsenring et al., 2023), especially for complex, chronic, personality-linked, or treatment-resistant presentations (Abbass et al., 2012). To read more about its effectiveness, please visit ISTDP UK.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR) is a non-invasive, effective trauma therapy that "neutralises" trauma memories through bilateral stimulation (typically via eye movements). EMDR is often associated with an accelerated learning and rapid reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with trauma memories. Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) provides a systematic way to examine our thoughts and beliefs of the world to facilitate changes to our thinking patterns, which subsequently informs our emtional reactions and behaviours. CBT is at present the most well-researched evidence-based therapy framework, and has shown great utility in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression.
